The George centre
Situated in the heart of Grantham, the George Centre is a stunning 'boutique' shopping and business centre that successfully mixes both smaller independent retail outlets with high street names.
Retaining the Georgian façade of the former George Hotel, the centre offers visitors highly distinctive and individual shopping in a traditional setting.
There are stairs, lifts and escalators for access to the upper floor. There are also disabled toilets and baby changing facilities.
The George Hotel is a three storey brick building, built in 1780. It has a circular window with original tracery. The interior includes original fireplaces and Adam decoration on the stairs. The cellars may contain traces of a medieval inn. The carriageway, which has been filled in, has a date stone of 1780. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.
The George Hotel has a keystone of 1780 which was when the present building was constructed to replace an earlier hostelry. The north wing was added in 1923.
The hotel was substantially remodelled in the 1990s when it was converted into a shopping centre.
